Seriously though, I’m done with red meat.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not trying to go vegetarian, I can’t even do pescatarian, I just love chicken too much. But the red me has got to go! I have been struggling with this decision for a long time but it’s hard to shake a medium rare steak with a bottle of red wine. Yes, I meant to put bottle instead of glass. I’m already cutting out red meat don’t take red wine from me too. Seriously though, the health and environmental costs of our meat-based food system has me looking at my diet in a new and less flattering light.

Fun fact you might not know unless you binge Netflix Documentaries like me, eating meat hardens your blood vessels. The culprit is a compound called carnitine and it’s been linked to atherosclerosis, the hardening or clogging of the arteries. I mean I really like red meat but that’s not the type of harden I’m trying to get. Ok, I’m not specialist but as a professional athlete I’ve done my research and its been found that increased carnitine levels are connected to increased risks for cardiovascular disease.

Hey get this, all your vegetarian and vegan friends you make fun of when you all go out to eat, might out live you. Studies show healthier protein sources such as fish, poultry, nuts, and legumes was associated with a lower risk of mortality. I personally will still be making fun of my vegan and vegetarian friends but I’m going to switch things up so I can make fun of them for a long time to come. Charring meat increases toxins like nitrosamines that can lead to cancer of the stomach. For real, look it up!


If you aren’t on the bandwagon yet just wait for it. Have you all heard of pink slime? Get this, it’s a meat additive containing fatty bits of leftover meat that’s heated, spun to remove the fat, and then treated with ammonia gas to kill bacteria. Then they send this science experiment to grocery stores and meat packers, where the it’s added to ground beef. Not only does that affect your meat but the pathogen can spread throughout your kitchen. Don’t just avoid grocery store prepackaged meats, your favorite restaurant is probably using transglutaminase, an enzyme formerly harvested from animal blood, but now produced through fermentation of bacteria. They call that one meat glue, sounds appetizing don’t it?

One of the foods most likely to mess you up with E. coli include cattle. It’s mixed and matched with pink slime and meat glue, your burger could contain meat from 15 cows or more than 1,500. I mean unless you ask the butcher yourself, or you’re going out to the back and putting down your family cattle yourself, you have no idea.

Eating red meat increases your chance of getting type 2 diabetes and that’s the last thing my Jamaican blood line needs. Also it’s linked to colon and brain disease. My doctor and I are friendly enough without him trying to check my colon just cause I had a hamburger too many.

I mean the bottom line is, red meat is that gamble I’m no longer willing to take. I’m not a betting man, and I my luck is bad enough. I don’t want to risk it. Anyway now this is just an excuse to eat more chicken!
